Treatment for Hair Loss

Hair Transplant

What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a procedure performed by a plastic or dermatological surgeon to move hair from one area of the head to a bald region. Typically, hair is taken from the back or side of the head and relocated to the front or top.

Procedure Setting:

  • Hair transplants usually take place in a medical office under local anesthesia.

Causes of Hair Loss:

  • The primary cause of hair loss is pattern baldness, often linked to genetics.
  • Other contributing factors include diet, stress, illness, hormonal imbalance, and medications.

Hair transplants are a solution for addressing hair loss by redistributing hair from one part of the head to another. They are commonly performed in a medical office, and the causes of hair loss can vary, including genetic factors, diet, stress, illness, hormonal imbalance, and medications.

Is It Painful After Hair Transplant?

After a hair transplant, patients may experience some discomfort, swelling, and tenderness in the treated areas. However, significant pain is uncommon. Pain management medications prescribed by the surgeon can help alleviate any discomfort during the initial days post-surgery.

Does Donor Area Hair Grow Back?

Yes, the hair in the donor area, usually taken from the back or sides of the scalp, does grow back. The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) techniques are designed to minimize the impact on the donor area. While initial shedding may occur, new hair growth typically begins within a few months, and over time, the donor area regains its natural appearance.

The hair transplant procedure involves the surgical removal and transplantation of hair follicles from one part of the scalp (the donor area) to another (the recipient area). There are two primary techniques commonly used for hair transplantation: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Here’s an overview of the hair transplant procedure:

Planning:

  • The surgeon develops a customized plan, considering factors such as the number of grafts needed, the density of donor hair, and the desired outcome.

Anesthesia:

  • On the day of the procedure, local anesthesia is administered to both the donor and recipient areas to ensure the patient’s comfort.

Donor Area Harvesting:

  • FUT Technique:

    • A strip of scalp containing hair follicles is surgically removed from the donor area (typically the back or sides of the scalp).
    • The incision is closed with sutures, leaving a linear scar that can be concealed by surrounding hair.
  • FUE Technique:

    • Individual hair follicles are extracted directly from the donor area using a small punch tool.
    • This technique leaves tiny, dot-like scars that are less noticeable and don’t create a linear scar.

Graft Preparation:

  • The harvested follicles are carefully dissected and prepared for transplantation.

Recipient Area Transplantation:

  • Tiny incisions are made in the recipient area where hair is to be transplanted.
  • Individual grafts are meticulously placed into these incisions, adhering to the natural hair growth pattern.

Postoperative Care:

  • Patients are given postoperative care instructions, including information on medications, activities to avoid, and the proper care of the treated areas.

Recovery:

  • Recovery times vary, but most patients can resume normal activities within a few days to a week.
  • Initial shedding of transplanted hair is normal, and new hair growth typically begins within a few months.

Follow-Up:

  • Follow-up appointments with the surgeon are scheduled to monitor progress and address any concerns.

What is the safe donor area?

The safe donor area for a hair transplant is typically the back and sides of the scalp, referred to as the “donor zone” or “permanent zone.” Hair follicles in this area are genetically resistant to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for hair loss. As a result, the hair in the donor area is less likely to undergo miniaturization and fall out.

In both Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures, the safe donor area is utilized for harvesting hair follicles:

  1. FUT (Strip Harvesting):

    • In FUT, a strip of scalp containing hair follicles is surgically removed from the donor area. The incision is typically made in the lower back of the scalp, where hair growth is dense.
    • The advantage of FUT is that it allows for the extraction of a larger number of grafts in a single session.
  2. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction):

    • In FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted directly from the donor area using a small punch tool. The extraction process leaves tiny, dot-like scars that are scattered throughout the donor region.
    • FUE is known for its minimally invasive nature and lack of a linear scar, making it a popular choice for those who prefer to wear short hairstyles.
