Dermoid cysts

Dermoid cysts are noncancerous growths that can occur in various parts of the body. These cysts are unique because they contain tissues such as hair, skin, teeth, or even bone. Dermoid cysts are congenital, meaning they are present at birth, and they develop from cells that are supposed to form the skin.

Here are some key points about dermoid cysts:

Characteristics:

  1. Contents: Dermoid cysts can contain a variety of tissues, including hair, sebaceous (oil) glands, sweat glands, teeth, bone, and sometimes more complex structures like cartilage or nerve tissue.
  2. Appearance: The cysts are typically smooth, rounded lumps that are often painless.
  3. Location: Dermoid cysts can occur in various parts of the body, but they commonly found in the ovaries, face, neck, or spinal cord.
Symptoms:
  • Dermoid cysts often asymptomatic and may discovered incidentally.
  • Symptoms may occur if the cyst becomes large, infected, or causes pressure on surrounding structures.

Diagnosis:

  • Imaging studies, such as ultrasound or MRI,  commonly used to diagnose dermoid cysts and determine their size and location.

Treatment:

  • Small, asymptomatic dermoid cysts may not require treatment.
  • Surgical removal typically recommended for larger cysts, those causing symptoms, or when there is a risk of complications.

Complications:

  • Dermoid cysts can sometimes become infected, causing pain and swelling.
  • Rupture of the cyst may lead to inflammation and can cause complications, such as peritonitis if it occurs in the abdominal cavity.
